Mix Tape 88

// DESCRIPTION

Mix Tape ’88” brings the boombox back as a rusted, weathered relic, mounted against a wall of stacked cassette tapes with neon lettering blazing red above. The boombox itself is heavily distressed, its metal surface corroded and worn like it’s been sitting in a garage for decades, waiting to be found. Behind it, hundreds of cassette tapes form a textured backdrop, each one a fragment of someone’s carefully curated soundtrack.

This piece is about the ritual of making a mix tape – choosing tracks, timing them just right, pressing record and hoping you got it perfect. The rust and decay speak to how those physical objects have aged, but the neon keeps the memory alive and burning. It’s a tribute to the boombox as the centrepiece of every bedroom, every block party, every summer that got soundtracked by whatever you’d taped off the radio that week.
